Italy 12.98 was born to allow an unlimited navigation, maintaining the feeling of performance fast cruiser and sensations at the helm of a true thoroughbred, even in pleasantness and easeness typical of the Italia Yachts models maneuver.
The project data suggest an all round behavior, where the performance match easy handling, safety and comfort.
On the waves, Italia 12.98 sail powerful, steady and soft giving an exciting upwind sailing experience. The boat is very easy to handle, always light at the helm, also allowing the use in racing at high levels thanks to the excellent value rating / performance.
The European Yacht of the Year Award will be presented for the 14th time in January 2017 during the Boot in Dusseldorf.
The Jury, consisting of the 11 contributing magazines, has just completed the first pre-selections and the Italia 12.98 is among the finalists.
The hull and deck are built of sandwich cores with PVC with different densities depending on the construction needs. The skins
are laid in E-glass (mat, mats and unidirectional) impregnated with vinylester resin. The lamination is performed at a controlled temperature between 16 °C and 25 °C. Reinforcing plates are inserted in corrispondance of the equipment deck. The central part
of the hull is full laminated to improve the resistance to concentrated efforts. All bulkheads are marine plywood from 15 to 25 mm and are bonded to the hull and gusseted to the internal structure and the deck. The deck is bonded with structural adhesive and laminated internally. A structural carbon frame is placed inside the hull glued and gusseted, to share the efforts of the mast and
the rigging and bulkheads and furniture are fixed over the same. The deck is finished gelcoat surfaces; the bridge and walkable
areas are finished with antiskid from the female mold. The benches and the cockpit are finished in teak 10 mm.
The hull lines of Italia 12.98 contemplate a proper balance between comfort and performance, borrowing the fluid concepts developed for the 9.98 “fuoriserie”
with regard to the distribution of volumes, while maintaining the key features for the interior in perfect cruising style. The fore and aft rake are more obvious than the other models of the yard. The result is a smaller wetted surface area for the benefit of performance in light wind conditions. The hull has flared sections, with narrow waterlines and V-shaped bow sections. Aft waterlines sections allow a variabile dynamic length, short in light wind, longer with increasing speed. The aspects related to navigation comfort are very cared, thanks to a careful study
on the longitudinal trim and symmetrical volumes while heeled, as well as in the concentration of the weights as much as possible to limit the pitching.
Italia 12.98 is available with different keel versions, in order to meet different requirements. The standard version foresee a full
lead “T-Keel” with a 2,25 meters draft. A shallow keel, 1,95 meters draft is proposed as an option. The rudder blade has a CNC milled mold and it has been high efficiency designed. The standard blade draft is 2,00 meters. The two fiberglass steering wheels have
dual steering cables with pedestals containing sprocket and chain. The sector is mounted on aluminum. The stock bearings are self-aligning. Crash bar for instruments at the helm are available as option..
Italia 12.98 is equipped as standard with a 40 hp diesel engine with S-drive transmission and a 2-blade propeller complete with single lever control and instrument panel containing the counter and alarms for water temperature and oil pressure.
The acoustic isolated engine compartment is easy accessible frontally from the saloon and from the sides. The fuel tank is made of stainless steel and has a capacity of 220 litres.
The electrical system is 12V and feeds all utilities. The electrical panel is located near the chart table and contains all the switches of the main utilities on board.
All the interior lights and navigation lights are low consuption led type ones.
The fresh water system is based on two stainless steel water tanks with a total capacity of 360 litres to ensure long navigation periods without the necessity of refuelling.
The bilge system is made by a self-priming electric pump and a self-priming manual pump which can be operated from the cockpit.
Finally, the gas system, installed for the galley, consists of a special compartment cylinder connected by copper pipes with shut-off valve of the flow close to the cylinder and close to the kitchen.
With a 19/20 rig and two set of 20 degrees spreaders, the Italia 12.98 sail plan represents a careful compromise between performance and safety, even downwind in strong conditions.
In fact, the rearmost mast position allows a greater J dimension, that together with a high attack of the forestay provides a generous fore triangle, perfect to guarantee power during navigation in rough conditions and to use Code Zero sail or big downwind sails.
The sail area is designed to find a right balance between performance and easy handling, with an excellent straightening even with a small crew, and to ensure good performance during races as well as pleasant cruises.
Mast and rig
As standard Italia 12.98 has a John Mast 9/10 2 spreaders anodized aluminum including conduits for the passage of electrical equipment, anchor light nad navigation lights. The boom is in anodised aluminum with outhaul and double line reefing and the vang is telescopic. Upon request it is apossibole to choose different solutions for carbon mast and boom.
Nitronic discontinuous rod rigging with close turnbuckles. It comes standard with under deck jib furler. V1 chainplate is positioned on sheerline and D1 chainplate is placed on coach roof side for easy forward-aft walkway.
Mainsail + jib: 103 m2 (1108,6 ft2)
Mainsail + gennaker: 197 m2 (2120,5 ft2)
Italia 12.98 cockpit is open aft but it can be closed by a removable teak covered folding transom: the ideal solution for a quiet
and safe navigation, as to enjoy an easy access to the sea. After removing the sundeck, Italia 12.98 shows off a big open cockpit, assuming a more aggressive look, perfect for racing. Both the folding transom and cockpit benches are entirely covered in fine teak wood, while the teak on deck is optional. The sunbathing area on the deck is flat and smooth, thanks also to the flush deck hatches. The access to the interior of the cockpit is through a sliding hatch. The accessibility of adjustments is exemplary, either for a single man crew or for a crew, with the mainsail winches near the helmsman, both for a crew navigation. Finally, large lockers provide plenty of space for storage during the cruise, the furling system is below deck, halyards are collected under the hatch where the
trap is hidden inside and the spray hood is integrated in the carter on the deck.
The deck layout is ergonomic and functional, in perfect Italia Yachts’ style. The large cockpit, free from obstacles, with wide space for benches permits a smooth transition to the forward cockpit. Particular attention has been paid to the ergonomics of the maneuvers, in order to offer an easy and safe sailing even in the race with a full crew. There are multiple lockers for stowing everything needed for the cruise. All running rigging lines run under the deck and the clean layout is also evident moving forward, wide and free of obstructions. Italia 12.98 provides a “german sheet” mainsail circuit and a lot of features in perfect race style. As optional, jib barbers and spinnaker gear arrangement, spinnaker padeyes, spinnaker sheets deviators, spi arms padeyes, outer jib downhaul and eyebolts are available. The backstay has an hydraulic adjustement, ball bearing blocks, rudder bearings, the self aligning stock bearing, halyards and sheets are in Dyneema®. All these features are available as standard and in conjunction with the rod rigging allow the owner the transformation from cruise to race in few time and without any additional charge.
The interior design of Italia 12.98 has presented a major challenge for the Italia Yachts designers. Starting from their experience with the award-winning 13.98, they have developed the same concepts regarding ergonomic design, brightness, consistency and balance between classic styles and contemporary design, while maintaining a reduced BWL to guarantee high performances. The result is extraordinary, giving the feeling of wide open spaces, typical of larger boats. The feeling on board recalls wide spaces, expanded by the use of wall cabinets and white inserts, coordinated with teak surfaces, to complete a bright and dynamic visual journey. The layout is also characterized by the total absence of sharp edges, characteristic of all the shipyard’s models, with numerous handrails to allow you to move in total safety, even while sailing with strong angles of heel.
Going below deck, you feel the high quality of the materials and the perfect finishing: the teak in horizontal veneers, as the handcraft finished upholstered. The interior is surprising for its exceptional spaciousness and the ergonomic layout of the furniture: there are countless drawers, cabinets, cupboards and shelves harmoniously integrated into the overall design of the interiors. In the dinette, in the galley, in the cabins, each activity has its dedicated space; the standard interiors layout is made of three cabins and two heads with separate shower box, chart table and galley with “L” shape configuration.
LThe saloon is surprising for elegance, rational distribution of spaces, natural light and ventilation. It consists of one sofa with “U” design, which is the setting for a wood openable table; a second sofa is on the opposite side; large storage spaces and various cabinets are made to the bulwarks above the sofa and under the seats. The sliding chart table is placed at side, close to the instrument panel and the display of the electronic equipment of the boat. The galley has an “L” layout and consists of a stove with oven and overhead, one refrigerator and one sink made of stainless steel.
Italia 12.98 in the standard configuration is available with a large owner’s cabin with private headroom and shower box, and two large aft cabins. It is also available a secon option for the front owner’s cabin. The owner’s cabin is generously sized, luminous and airy, with large storage space at side and under the bed; there is a closet with shelves and hangers to store clothings and the compartment under the bed is free for storage. All finishes and fittings are of high quality, with an extensive use of wood, leather and design accessories, to obtain a luxurious and comfortable mood. The two aft cabins have record breaking heights, extra large beds, abundant storage space and a second headroom: all you need to feel comfortable and pampered even the guests or the rest of the family.
